in my eyes the real issue is no one has any feeling behind teh rituals, they don't care, its only done to save face, their is no belief in it. I know everyone on r/china, ie ccj3 will just shit on ritual and confucianism because they think thats the issue with China. To be fair, the term Ah Q, the name of a fictional character created by Lu Xun in 1921 to represent the negative Chinese national character ( guomin xing ), was. Thats a mind fucking blown moment to think about. Two persons shaking hands makes them trust each other. If we believe in it or at least if we realize that through it we can become closer, The ritual is like magic. Lu Xun wrote this story in 1921, the year in which the Chinese Communist Party was founded, ten years after the 1911 Revolution changed China from a dynasty to a republic. Think about the western social rituals of voting, or wearing a suit and tie, or prom, or a handshake, or a toast at a wedding. Natasha Kate Moyes 'The True Story of Ah Q' is the story of an ignorant and close-minded liar, cheat, and sexist of a man. Social rituals keep countries functioning. Transcribed: Original transcription from. There is no true value or feeling behind the rituals everyone just does them but they don't give a fuck besides to save face. Source: Selected Stories of Lu Hsun, Published by Foreign Languages Press, Peking, 1960, 1972 Images for chapters 1 and 4 from Chinese Literature Volume 5-6, 1977. How it relates to modern China? Just this notion of ritual. Remember the death scene vividly and Ah Q being wheeled out to his death and trying to think of a song to sing to honor his death and he couldn't think of one. But while wanting to write I was in some trepidation, too, which goes to show that I am not one of those who achieve glory by writing for an immortal pen has always been required to record the deeds of an immortal man, the man becoming known to posterity through. Remember the shitty rich family who was all honorable but would like beat the shit out of Ah Q because he said he was part of their family and ruined their reputation. For several years now I have been meaning to write the true story of Ah Q.
